Based on my new picture book, Gathered at the Table: Celebrating Communion. here is a responsive liturgy, where the congregation, including children, are Invited to repeat the simple but powerful phrase: Come, Come to the table.
A RESPONSIVE LITURGY FOR COMMUNION SUNDAY
(L denotes Leader, C denotes Congregation.)
L: Called to the table, to share the wine and bread,
“I want you to remember me,” Jesus softly said.
C: Come, Come to the table.
L: We think about the mystery – the words that Jesus said,
And how he gave his life for us as we break the bread.
C: Come, Come to the table.
L: Gathered at the table, God’s Spirit in the air,
We drink the cup of blessing, the bread of life we share.
C: Come, Come to the table.
L: Together in communion, one family – young and old,
We celebrate together, as ancient words are told.
C: Come, Come to the table.
L: There’s room at the table, no matter how we feel,
Jesus reaches out to us in this holy meal.
C: Come, Come to the table.
L: We rise from the table, forgiven, loved, and free.
We leave to be the people who God calls us to be.
C: Come, Come to the table.
L: Gathered at the table, surrounded by God’s grace,
We are one Christian family, in every time and place.
C: Come, Come to the table.

Glynys,
I am Rev. Bill McClung of Grace United Methodist Church in Parksley, Virginia, on the Eastern Shore of Virginia. I have recently learned about your books through a friend, Rev. Alice Flemming Townley. We are part of a pilot project within our United Methodist conference aimed at creating more child-friendly worship experiences. In September, we used your “Little Mole Goes to School” Book. This week, we are using your ‘Gathered at the Table’ book to discuss communion, following our emphasis on World Communion Sunday yesterday. Alice suggested that I reach out to you, as she had previously shared with you about what we are doing. I plan to use one of your Advent books in December and the baptism book on the Baptism of the Lord in January. Thank you for crafting these amazing books.
Hello Rev. Bill! It is so great to hear from you and to know that you’re using my books as you minister to children. I’m so glad that Alice put us in touch. Thank you so much for your kind words and for supporting me. If you didn’t already know, I have many free downloadable resources to accompany my books at this link: https://www.glenysnellist.com/free-resources/
Please let me know how I can assist you. I do offer free virtual author visits to churches and Sunday schools and I’d love to support you any way I can.
